Annotation

I’ve choose to compare Malaysia star with Western’s because I found there are something interesting in between them. Their culture is totally different including the opinion from audience is obviously different from one to another. Why I choose YouTubers rather than famous actor or singer in Malaysia because recently RED PEOPLE is the issue of discussion in social webpage and I’d follow their news because it’s everywhere on my Facebook wall and many people are discussing bout them. Next, Jason Chen and Sam Tsui are YouTubers with awesome performance and vocal who uses their talent to share with everyone and become famous by their songs cover to albums.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I found that Malaysian YouTubers need more effort to get more fans that like their performance because after audience watched their dancing, singing and knowing the truth about them that they do all this is to become popular instead of sharing and their real appearance, they felt being irritated. Compare with Western’s that being their real self and trying to share out their version of songs cover without any expectations. Besides, they didn’t edit their photo like what RED PEOPLE did because they want people to know them and the real appearance of them not the one who audience can’t even recognise in public places. Therefore, I personally think that RED PEOPLE need more training to stay longer in this scope and decrease their negative comments. Lastly, everywhere has different culture from human with human to country, places, family and others. No one is perfect in this world, being real and have confident is the most important thing to stay longer this scope because no one willing to be friend with a fake people unless you want to be the next target of discussion and Photoshop.

Interview

After exploring on webpages and giving some opinion about how I feel towards these celebrities. Now, I want to see what does people around me feels about these celebrities. There are few question I've asked:
  • Do you know who is RED PEOPLE?
  • What do you think about them? (opinion)
  • Do you think they suit to be in this scope?
  • Is there any difference between Malaysia YouTubers and Western’s?
I've ask few friends for a small interview then, I created a simple info graphic for the contents for the answer i got.
Things that I've collected from my friends about YouTubers.

Part of my interview answer.

Comment session 2

I've visited Barnabas’s blog and he made an interesting video to explain about RED PEOPLE. He points out that RED PEOPLE are children nowadays are getting more narcissism. It’s true because taking self-portrait every day is not a big deal anymore. In the past, people takes self-portrait when they wants to do identity card, passport or some necessary thing that need to snap a self-portrait. Back to few centuries, there no such things as photo and human use painting method to make their self-portrait. But now, technology is getting wider so there is numerous type of camera and there is one specific camera that people use to take self-portrait, Casio EXILIM-TR which comes with few versions as I mentioned in my previous blog.

Photo editing culture

After a deeper research on RED PEOPLE and other celebrities in other country, I realise that Malaysian uses a lot of photo editing apps for their images than other countries. There are numerous apps they used for editing – Mei Tu Xiu Xiu (美图秀秀), Photoshop, Photo Editor, Piclab, PhotoWonder and many other apps. By using these apps, their photo can become a totally different from their real appearance because they edited 70% of the images using slim tool, light tool, skin tone adjustment and filter. The reason why they edit their photo so much because it helps them to look like a star or helping them to get more fans. This issue makes people confuse on what is the real appearance of the celebrity because they uses a self-portrait camera that has auto beautifying function. User don't need to learn Photoshop to edit photos, the camera auto-generate to skin brightening and make-up mode. Here are some examples of photo that uses photo editing and a good quality gadget for self-portrait, EXILIM TR (Casio brand digital camera specially for self-portrait and for best solution):

Joyce Chu (left) Charles Tee (middle) Wong Xiao Le (right) before and after photo editing/ TR

Joyce Chu before and after photo editing/ TR

Yuki Lee (陈太) before and after photo editing/ TR

Besides, we know RED PEOPLE’s photo is their real appearance by watching their video because they only edit their photo not the video. For example, Jimmy Tan has obvious different appearance between his image and video because he uses photo editor to slim down his body size.

Jimmy Tan before and after photo editing/ TR

Example of how Photoshop editing for body slimming

Therefore, it’s a culture for them to edit their photo before posting unless they use an auto editing digital camera because an unedited photo looks bad in lightning and each pores or pimples on the face can be seen clearly. In short, they can’t accept the truth that they look in that way so they edited their photo as much as they can to look gorgeous. But why I will says that Malaysians use more photos editing than Westerns?

After researching, I found that Western people uses Photoshop editing mostly for celebrities and their editing is for posters, album or other events. They seldom edit their daily life photo because it’s they posted their daily life photo for their fans and they’re open to let people know their personality and appearance in their daily life. But why they edit their posters? Because it’s for events and it’s normal to do Photoshop in posters or albums to adjust the body shapes so that it will attract people to look at it.
Candice Huffine before and after Photoshop

Kim Kardashian before and after photoshop

Candice Huffine normal photo without thick make-up/ editing

This reveals the true self of them without make-ups and editing when they’re not involve in events because no one would like to see you in make-up all the day. For me I will curious about how do they look like when they’re not with make-up. Not to laugh at them just wonder why not they have more self-confident than wearing a mask all the time?

Above are the example of celebrity that uses Photoshop and their self-portrait. Western Youtubers also didn’t Photoshop their photo because they being who they are. They’re famous because of their talent not from their appearance. They look exactly the same as they're from the video.

Comment session

I've visited Michelle Ng’s blog who is doing the same topic as me, she’s comparing culture between sport celebrities which I was planning to do at first. So I decided to give her some example of culture she can compare with like how Malaysian get involves in sport scope or how they get train because I discovered that majority parents in Malaysia don’t encourage their children to train their sport ability but they want their children to get educated to further their studies. Meanwhile in some country like China, parents want their children to train hard in sport and become an excellent athlete to join worldwide sport competition. Therefore, they will send their children to athlete school when they were a kid and let them struggle in training.

Westerners started with... to become popular

For westerners, they don’t do such thing as Malaysian did because they've mature thinking and they knew that there’s nothing good for them to do all this. Besides, it’s normal for them to dance in the public or creating new group with their own songs. It’s not a big deal because it happens everywhere at their place. So, what they do as a YouTuber and how they earn money by just being a YouTuber?

First, they make some covers and share it to everyone. Once people know them, they will always follow his posts and check out their new covers. They also gain more fans, they will try on something new like creating new songs, feat with someone in the cover or play instruments. This helps them to gain their viewers and supporters. In short, they produce something nice and meaningful that everyone can accept their work. These are example of Western YouTubers works:

Grenade (Bruno Mars) cover by Jason Chen

One in a million (Neyo) cover by Jason Chen ft.Verseatile
Unexpectedly by Jason Chen Original - Official Music Video

For my opinion, at first I’m surprise and glad to those young people trying hard to achieve their dreams no matter how people says about them but after looking forward to their news and how they promote themselves, somehow it makes me feel irritated to see their post everywhere with unreal and silly information. For example, they felt that they look not bad so people start posting ranking of handsome boys and girls of their members and slowly to handsome boys and girls in Kuala Lumpur, Penang and many other places. In short, one is interesting but when it comes to too much, I’ll become annoying.

Second version of RED PEOPLE's post

Public felt that Red People should not be celebrities because they aren't suitable in this scope. All they’re doing is just to make them popular and they want to earn money by breaking the number of views and likes in social webpages. However, they succeed to break the views and likes in their posts but majority of them received negative comments by their appearance. Conservatism appears in this case because majority Malaysians are not as open minded as Westerners. Some Malaysians still live in the past, they can’t accept present human’s behavior that wearing less cloth and their attitude or they have some opinion about how the others behave. Therefore, when Red people’s news appears in social media, many people complain about them. Some of them even create a short video to talk about the celebrities or illustrate the character and make fun with their video and photo.

Red People started with... to become popular

Recently, there’s a plenty of young Malaysians who want to achieve their dream of being a celebrity and formed as a group, the RED PEOPLE. Their news are distributes through social media such as Facebook and word of mouth. There are bundles of news about them in Facebook’s wall that makes them become popular in a short time. Medias helps them to distribute their appearance to public by introduce their group members, post news about their performance, their daily life and many other positive and negative news of them.

In 2014, RED PEOPLE posted a MV about their group “You’re not Red” and another latest MV “Sambal Party” due to coming soccer event, FIFA World cup. Since new medias posted Red People’s news, many people felt that it was meaningless news that brings embarrassment to the country because they created low quality video and songs to share with universe. In order to make everyone know their appearance they willing to the anything like dancing in public places and let people to criticize them. The more critics they receive, the more people know them. So, it’s sad to received negative comments but they’re happy because they earn money by breaking the amount of views.

One of them even posted a status that makes people laugh at his education. He went to one of the island in Malaysia and he posted in Facebook with “Bye Malaysia” at the end of the post because he thought that it was another country. He then recorded a short video to reply the comments from public since many of them scolded him include his family. This video breaks the views records with dislikes from public and become popular in YouTube and Facebook.

Criticism

How criticism related with celebrity in Malaysia with other country?

Criticism between humans is always happening everywhere in worldwide. Critics are about how people look on something and what is their opinion on it, whether it’s good or bad. In Malaysia, majority people give negative comments on something especially on social media compare with the Westerns. Majority Malaysians see things in a negative way by detecting someone’s weaknesses and attack them before they praise them which makes the celebrity needs to create another video clip  to explain about their previous video clip and replay the comments.

I would use a Malaysian young girl, Joyce Chu as an example for this statement. She is a YouTube celebrity from Johor who has nice appearance and has some artistic talent in playing instrument like ukulele. As she’s pretty and many people misunderstood that she is a Korean girl instead of Malaysian, she wrote a song, Malaysia Chabor to make it cleared that she is a Malaysian. So, this is the song :

Malaysia Chabor - Joyce Chu

After the song is published, she faced a social attack about her singing, pronunciations and attitude that force her to close her Facebook page because she couldn't take it yet.

comments from public about Joyce Chu singing

Facebook page closed announcement

Due to the critics from public especially Malaysian, she decided to create a video clip that specially made to reply public about the comments she received. Here's the video of Joyce Chu's reply for Malaysia Chabor MV:

Malaysia Chabor speaks + ukulele tutorial

For the Westerners, they don’t really critics once singing or performance like what Malaysian does because it is very common for them to record a video clip and share it to the public webpages. So, there’re no points for them to checkout one by one and critic them since there’re too much of them. They will comment for the clip about how crazy is the clip or some logic things about the clip like "Oh man, this guy is F crazy.","what the hell is she doing?" instead of scolding the one who is in the video about how ugly or pretty they are or their personality. So, here’s another YouTube celebrity, a Taiwanese American singer, Jason Chen. At first he is a cover singer in YouTube and soon he came out with his own albums.

Thank You - Jason Chen

Roar - Katy Perry (Jason Chen cover)

He doesn't have as many supporters and likes as Joyce Chu has but his singing is very nice and he has lots of positive comments for his songs.
comments from public about Jason Chen's singing

Yeah, so this is the comparison criticism culture I've made between Western and Malaysian. Of course, we all know that not all Malaysians give negative comments and not all westerns give positive comments but still no matter what you do, there’re always people who tries to make things complicated because whatever you do, people always have something negative to say especially in Malaysia. I would say it always happen in Malaysia because they always judge someone’s exterior personality before seeing the inner and they jealous about what people have and they can’t get it - HATERS GONNA HATE.

Define culture

What is the meaning of culture?

An appreciation of good literature, music, art and food? or a colony of bacteria? or the full range of humans behavior patterns?

For me, culture is human's behavior patterns which they have used to it for a long time and used it every day. Culture is the one that brings humans to their attitude and image to the others. In short, it is human’s behavior.

In Malaysia, we have lots of culture like culture of eating, culture of praying, culture of communicating and so on. Malaysia has different types of religion so we have more cultures than the other country.

But what does culture related with celebrities?

Define celebrity

So, here's the question.

What is celebrity and who are they?

Celebrity is famous people who are the newsmaker, very important people with well-known personality and name. They could be the one who created unforgettable achievements or did things that make majority people know their appearance. For example, Malaysia sport celebrity, Datuk Lee Chong Wei who plays badminton and makes the country proud for him by joining in the worldwide badminton competitions and helps the country to bring up the name.

http://www.malaysiaresume.com/CMSPages/GetFile.aspx?guid=236518cd-fbf4-4fe6-9b83-eccf522286d1

If a celebrity’s news spreads in an old media it shows they’re more famous because usually newspaper posted big news and most of them are posted in new media too. However, new media is always spread news wider and faster but usually the old age people prefer to use traditional way to read news which is in paper form because it’s more solid and easier for them to communicate with.
